“Beyond the Binary” is a six-months campaign targeted to discuss the issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) with secondary and college-level students. Because gender is socially constructed, there might be various beliefs and misconceptions based on dominant social norms. One primary misconception is to understand gender in terms of a fixed binary, male and female. However, various societies are increasingly embracing the concept of gender as a spectrum. We chose the title of our project, “Beyond the Binary (BTB)” to illustrate this idea.
Objective:
To begin a discussion around SOGIESC with young people
To make young people aware of various issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community
To vocalize alternative ideas and educate the public in order to create tolerant and just social spaces
To work with a team of Queer Ambassadors in order to empower marginalized voices
To build solidarity with media professionals
